The Kuelap fortress is a walled city of more than 400 buildings, built by the Chachapoyas culture in northern Peru. The fortress is one of the largest in the Americas, with an extension of six hectares. It is located on top of a mountain at 3000 meters above sea level, and dominates the valley of the Utcubamba River.

The fortress is composed of two superimposed artificial platforms, on which the town center is located. The most impressive thing about Kuelap are the enormous defensive walls that delimit the “Lower Town” and the “Upper Town”.

Fortified Citadel of Kuelap: 1-Day Itinerary

9:30 a.m.: At the specified time, we will depart for the fortified citadel of Kuelap. After approximately 45 minutes, we will reach the archaeological zone of Macro for observation and an explanation of the residential complex built on the slope of a hill. We will then transfer to the town of Nuevo Tingo and later to the boarding station and departure platform to board Peru’s first cable car system (teleférico). This will take us on a 20-minute journey covering 4 km, arriving at Malca Pampa. We will visit the interpretation room and then walk for about 30 minutes to reach and explore the external area of Kuelap. Here, a professional guide will explain the historical process of Kuelap for approximately 45 minutes, covering various places such as ceremonial enclosures, decorated circular rooms, etc. Now, also experience a new virtual adventure with Kuelap 360°, a virtual journey through the Kuelap of our ancestors. Return in cable cars, followed by a lunch and return transfer to Chachapoyas.
