Overview

Lake Titicaca unfolds at over 3,800 meters above sea level as the highest navigable body of water in the world and the mystical birthplace of Andean civilizations. Its deep blue surface reflects an infinite sky, creating a surreal landscape where water and the horizon seem to merge into one.Beyond its breathtaking natural beauty, the lake preserves an invaluable cultural wealth. Its islands—whether woven from reeds or sculpted from stone—are home to communities that keep alive ancient customs, languages, and textiles honored as world heritage, offering an authentic encounter with the roots of the Altiplano.

What to see

  • Uros Floating Islands

Astonishing floating platforms woven entirely by hand from local totora reeds, where the community maintains an ancestral lifestyle upon the lake's waters.

  • Taquile Island

A peaceful island renowned for its pre-Inca farming terraces, panoramic lake views, and a time-honored textile art celebrated globally for its fine quality.

  • Amantaní Island

A tranquil natural sanctuary famous for its pre-Hispanic temples perched on hilltop peaks and the warm hospitality of local families who open their homes to travelers.

Practical information

Best time to visit: From May to October, the Altiplano brings completely clear days, brilliant sunshine, and golden sunsets perfect for sailing. The rainy season from November to April softens daytime temperatures and cloaks the surrounding hills in a deep green.

How to get there: Accessed primarily from the city of Puno, the lake's main gateway. Puno can be reached via a short flight to Juliaca Airport (JUL), a scenic tourist bus ride from Cusco or Arequipa, or a panoramic train journey.

Travel tips

  • Ensure prior acclimatization due to the Altiplano’s high altitude, resting properly before attempting any uphill walks on the islands.
  • Dress in warm layers, as the daytime sun is highly intense but temperatures drop drastically as soon as night falls.
  • Keep local currency cash (soles) on hand, since there are no ATMs or card payment terminals available on the islands.
  • Use high-factor sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat, as solar radiation doubles due to the water’s reflection.
