Itinerary
Set out on the iconic 4-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the most legendary way to reach the citadel on foot along ancient Inca paths. Over four unforgettable days, you’ll cross fertile valleys beside the Urubamba River, climb to the famous Warmihuañusca (4,000 m)—also known as Dead Woman’s Pass—and hike remarkably preserved trail sections framed by tropical forest and high-Andean panoramas. Along the way you’ll explore outstanding archaeological sites such as Llactapata, Runkuraqay and Sayacmarca, and take in epic viewpoints at Phuyupatamarca, the celebrated “Town Above the Clouds”. The grand finale is unforgettable: arriving through Inti Punku (Sun Gate) and entering Machu Picchu for a 3-hour guided tour, then returning by train. With organized campsites, included meals and expert guiding, this is the ultimate mix of nature, history and adventure.
Your journey begins very early, between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m., with hotel pick-up in Cusco and transport to Km 82, where your guide will brief you on the day’s plan. At the first checkpoint, you must show your original passport and, if applicable, your ISIC card. You’ll start hiking with Quechua porters through fertile valleys alongside the Urubamba River, enjoying views of the Verónica snow peak and glacier. You’ll visit Llactapata, an ancient Inca settlement that once protected access to two valleys, as your guide explains its history and importance in the Inca road network. You then continue for about 1 hour and 30 minutes to the campsite at Wayllabamba (3,000 m), where afternoon tea and dinner are served before you rest in your tents.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner. Hiking time: approx. 7 hours. Overnight: Wayllabamba campsite.
Wake-up is at 6:00 a.m. for personal preparation and packing, followed by breakfast in the dining tent. You’ll hike upward toward Llulluchapampa, a great area for a pause and gradual acclimatization before the main challenge: Warmihuañusca (4,000 m), known as Dead Woman’s Pass, the highest point of this itinerary, with a coffee break along the way to recharge. From the top, you’ll enjoy panoramic views over two valleys—an incredible reward after the climb. You’ll then descend for about 1 hour and 30 minutes to the campsite at Pacaymayo, with lunch in Llulluchapampa. In the afternoon, tea is served at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m..
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack. Hiking time: approx. 8 hours. Overnight: Pacaymayo campsite.
After waking at 6:00 a.m. and breakfast, you’ll hike some of the best-preserved sections of the Inca Trail, surrounded by tropical forest, natural viewpoints and archaeological remains hidden in the greenery. You’ll visit Runkuraqay and Sayacmarca, strategic complexes that reveal Inca ingenuity in adapting to rugged terrain. After a lunch break, you’ll continue to Phuyupatamarca, the famous “Town Above the Clouds”, with spectacular views of Andean peaks and deep valleys. You’ll then descend for about 2 hours to the campsite at Wiñay Wayna, well known for its lush flora and impressive archaeological complex. A warm-water shower service is available here for an extra cost. Tea is served at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner in the evening.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack. Hiking time: approx. 6 hours. Overnight: Wiñay Wayna campsite.
You’ll wake at 4:00 a.m., have breakfast at 4:30 a.m. and depart at 5:30 a.m. toward Inti Punku (Sun Gate), arriving in about 1 hour and 20 minutes for one of the most anticipated moments of the entire trek. From here, the trail offers a symbolic entrance into the sanctuary and a first grand view before reaching the citadel. You’ll arrive at Machu Picchu around 8:00 a.m., store your backpacks, and begin a 3-hour guided tour through the Inca city, visiting iconic temples, plazas and terraces. Afterward, you’ll have free time for photos and exploration. In the afternoon you’ll meet in Aguas Calientes to board the return Expedition train to Ollantaytambo, then continue by vehicle to Cusco, arriving at your hotel and ending an unforgettable Inca experience.
