Itinerary
The Nevado Mateo Tour is one of the best one-day mountaineering options from Huaraz for travelers who want real altitude, snow, and technical progression without a multi-day expedition. Reaching 5,150 m, Nevado Mateo (Ulta sector) delivers dramatic glacier scenery and classic Cordillera Blanca panoramas inside Huascarán National Park. The logistics are a major advantage: access begins before the Punta Olímpica tunnel (4,750 m) on the Carhuaz–Chacas road, allowing you to focus your energy on the climb and experience a snowy summit in a single day. While technically moderate, it still requires strong fitness, comfort hiking at altitude, and essential prior acclimatization. A certified guide, a detailed technical briefing, and specialized equipment are included for an intense and rewarding adventure.
Departure at 3:00 am from Huaraz as we head toward Nevado Mateo, one of the peaks in the Ulta area within Huascarán National Park. Traveling along the Carhuaz–Chacas highway, we reach the access point that starts before the Punta Olímpica tunnel (4,750 m), a key advantage that makes the summit possible in one day. Upon arrival, your guide provides a technical briefing about the route and the proper use of mountaineering equipment, fitting boots, harness, helmet, and safety systems for the group. We then begin the ascent toward the glacier, crossing high-altitude terrain where cold temperatures and thinner air are noticeable, before stepping onto the snow for the final section. We progress with crampons and an ice axe toward the summit of Nevado Mateo (5,150 m), enjoying wide-open views of the Cordillera Blanca and the glacier environment. After summit time for photos and a short break, we descend carefully back to the starting point, have the box lunch (light meal), and return to Huaraz. Important note: you must be acclimatized the day before with a short hike such as Rocutuyocq Lake or the Pastoruri Glacier.
