Itinerary
Take on the legendary 4-day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, one of the Andes’ most breathtaking routes thanks to its dramatic shift from high mountains to the lush cloud-forest edge. You’ll hike from Challancancha (3,650 masl) to Soraypampa (3,920 masl) and—if you choose—climb to the stunning turquoise Humantay Lake (4,200 masl). On Day 2 you’ll conquer the biggest challenge: Salkantay Pass (4,650 masl), the highest point of the trek, with unforgettable views of the Salkantay, Humantay, Tucarhuay and Pumasillo snow peaks and Soyrococha lagoon. Then you’ll descend into warmer landscapes filled with waterfalls and coffee, cacao and coca plantations before reaching Aguas Calientes. The grand finale is a guided visit to Machu Picchu, with optional hikes to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.
We pick you up from your accommodation at 4:30 a.m. and travel by tourist bus for about 2.5 hours to Mollepata (2,800 masl), where you’ll have time for breakfast while the team organizes the load and prepares the horses, which will carry the camping equipment, supplies, and up to 6 kg of extra personal gear per traveler. Then you’ll continue by vehicle for one more hour to Challancancha (3,650 masl), the trekking starting point. From here, hike around three hours to Soraypampa (3,920 masl), where your first camp is set and lunch is served. In the afternoon, you can optionally hike to the spectacular Humantay Lake (4,200 masl), taking about three hours round trip. Return to camp for dinner and rest.
Meals: Lunch, dinner. Overnight: Andean cabin.
Early morning, enjoy an energy-packed breakfast before a roughly three-hour climb to Salkantay Pass (4,650 masl), the highest point of the entire route. From the top you’ll see spectacular views of the Salkantay, Humantay, Tucarhuay and Pumasillo glaciers and the Soyrococha lagoon. Then descend for about three hours to Huayracmachay for lunch. After a short break, continue descending into warmer cloud-forest edge landscapes for about three more hours until you reach Colpapampa (2,900 masl), your second camp.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Overnight: Tents (4-season tents under a thatched roof).
After breakfast, keep hiking into the cloud-forest edge, known for its warmer climate and lush vegetation. Along the way you’ll see coffee, cacao and coca plantations, tropical fruits, and small crystal-clear waterfalls. You’ll reach Playa Sahuayaco, a great place for lunch and a break. Later, transfer by vehicle for about one hour to Hydroelectric, then hike 2.5 hours along the railway to Aguas Calientes, the gateway town to Machu Picchu. Dinner and rest at your lodging.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Overnight: Hostel (private rooms with private bathroom).
Very early, around 5:30 a.m., you’ll line up for the buses to ascend to Machu Picchu. After entry, enjoy a ~2-hour guided tour as your guide explains the history, architecture and meaning of the site’s most important areas. Then you’ll have free time for photos, exploration, or an optional hike to Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu (extra cost). At the scheduled time, descend to Aguas Calientes for lunch on your own, then board the return train to Ollantaytambo, followed by transport back to Cusco.
