Itinerary

Take on an epic adventure with the 4-day / 3-night Choquequirao trek, one of Peru’s most spectacular and challenging routes. You’ll hike deep into the dramatic Apurímac Canyon, facing demanding descents and climbs through changing microclimates and diverse Andean vegetation. Starting from Capuliyoc, you’ll descend toward the Apurímac River and climb again to Marampata (2,910 masl), a natural viewpoint before reaching the main goal: Choquequirao, the legendary “Lost Sister of Machu Picchu”, famous for its scale, solitude and Inca architecture set between soaring mountains. With an expert guide, included campsites and full meals (as listed), this is the perfect trek for travelers seeking history, nature and a true off-the-beaten-path challenge.

4 Days and 3 nights
Local guide: English & Spanish

Very early, you’ll board private transport from Cusco to the district of Capuliyoc, a beautiful inter-Andean valley where you’ll have breakfast before starting the hike. You’ll pass the Capuliyoc Pass (2,915 masl) at around 10:00 a.m. and begin descending into the impressive Apurímac Canyon, enjoying sweeping views and changing vegetation along the trail. You’ll reach Chiquisca for lunch with spectacular canyon vistas, then continue down to Playa Rosalinas, where you’ll cross the bridge over the Apurímac River. From there, you’ll climb to your first campsite in Santa Rosa, finishing the day with Andean scenery and a true expedition feel.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner. Hiking time: 5 hours. Overnight: Santa Rosa campsite.

After breakfast, you’ll climb to Marampata (2,910 masl), a small settlement and natural viewpoint where you’ll have lunch and—if you’re lucky—spot condors soaring above the canyon. You’ll then continue for about one hour to reach the archaeological complex of Choquequirao, known as the “Lost Sister of Machu Picchu”. Your guide will lead you through the main sectors, explaining its history, architecture and strategic importance, while you enjoy the site’s rare tranquility and mountain atmosphere. After the visit, you’ll return to Santa Rosa for another night of camping.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Hiking time: 7 hours. Overnight: Santa Rosa campsite.

You’ll start the day exploring newly restored areas of Choquequirao before hiking back along the same trail to Santa Rosa for lunch. Then you’ll descend toward the valley, passing Playa Rosalinas again and continuing to Chiquisca (1,950 masl), your final campsite. Along the way you may try local fruits such as mazazamba for a refreshing boost, while the canyon once again reveals its immense scale and changing landscapes.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Hiking time: 8 hours. Overnight: Chiquisca campsite.

After breakfast, you’ll complete the final hike back up to Capuliyoc, enjoying last panoramic views of the canyon and valley. Private transport will be waiting to take you back to Cusco, ending your unique Andean expedition.
Meals: Breakfast. Hiking time: 4 hours. Overnight: None.
